Kindergartners Celebrate Earth Day

In preparation for Earth Day, kindergartners in Mrs. Tannehill’s class have been studying the rain forest and how important it is to our world. We have learned about the Three-Toed Sloth who hangs lazily all day long up in the tree and about the Blue Morpho Butterfly that lives in the canopy and emergent layers of the rain forest. Students enjoyed drinking milk from a coconut and then sampling the meat of it. We also sampled a mango and then squeezed the juice from it. It was decided that both the coconut and mango are cool to look at and touch, but not so good to eat! One food from the rain forest that everyone loved of course was chocolate! Please stop by and check out the rain forest growing in our hallway!
We have learned various ways of taking care of our earth such as recycling, picking up litter and planting trees and flowers. Kindergartners celebrated Earth Day by cleaning and weeding the front garden, before planting mammoth sunflower seeds. Everyone can watch the progress of our flowers through the summer.
Also on Earth Day, kindergartners enjoyed learning about calcium from Karla Hightower of the Cowley County Extension Office. Children made ice cream in a bag as they learned about eating a balanced diet and different foods from the dairy group.
Finally, students walked to Grandma Braddy’s and set free the ladybugs which they have grown from the larvae stage. Since hatching, the ladybugs have feasted on wet raisins in the ladybug house provided by Trevor Whiteman.
